The Next Big Thing in Social Enterprises

Since its founding, Human-I-T has been unique in the non-profit space. In a typical non-profit organization, 60% of income is derived from individual giving. At Human-I-T, just 2% of our revenue comes from grassroots donors. So how do we stay in business? How do we fund our impact programs without a massive fundraising operation? What makes us "sustainable?"

A social enterprise that seeks to maximize benefits to society and the environment. Rather than focusing only on profits, social enterprises also build a net-positive impact into their business models. Three popular examples of social enterprises that create public benefit in addition to making money. A social enterprise can be either for-profit or non-profit, and Human-I-T is a non-profit social enterprise.

We believe that it’s ok to make money while doing good. In fact, that’s the whole point of creating a business, isn’t it? You shouldn’t have to choose between doing good and living comfortably. In fact, if there were more companies and organizations that offered the opportunity to be paid while making positive change, the world would be a much better place. So how can we inspire a world where conscious capitalism- led by social enterprise- drives sustainable and just opportunities?

By extending the life of the electronics that we receive through our ITAD services, and then making them available for people who need them, Human-I-T addresses a second problem: the digital divide. We believe that all people deserve access to world-class products and experiences and that low cost should not translate to low quality. By lowering the barrier to entry, we create opportunities for people who are otherwise locked out.

Empowering People To Achieve Their Fullest Potential

As I mentioned at the beginning of this piece, holistic sustainability creates environmental, social, and economic benefits. Human-I-T’s ITAD services protect the environment by diverting e-waste from landfills. Our programs and partnerships create social benefits by putting technology into the hands of deserving families. And because we’re a social enterprise, these two focus areas come together to create high-quality jobs, catalyzing economic benefits right here within our own community.

In this way- through social enterprise, and by embracing holistic sustainability- Human-I-T grew from a scrappy computer repair shop into an opportunity factory. We're well on our way to being the most impactful nonprofit organization in the digital inclusion space. To learn more, visit us at https://www.connectwork.in/
